Jordan proved to be one of the most exciting and truly adventurous places
that we have visited since this whole tour began.
The game, as in Israel, had been called off courtesy of Saddam Hussein. He
had threatened military action against both Israel and Jordan if he didn't
receive an official invitation to play in the One Man and His Bat Charity
game. (Not strictly true!) Hence the game was called off.
This added time to our recreational period in Jordan, and I for one decided
to make the most of it.
Jordan is a very safe and exciting place to visit, a dying breed in tourist
destinations around the world today. From the capital of Amman we ventured
from the Regency Palace Hotel to sample the delights of the ancient cities
of Kerak, Jerash and the unforgetatble Petra. The latter was a dream come
true.
Just as Indiana Jones had done before me, I rode astride a fantastic white
charger through the narrow gorge in search of the hidden delights that had
been created some 2,000 years before. For anyone who has not been, go! For
anyone thinking of going, do it! For anyone not thinking of doing it, think
again! It is truly one of the seven wonders of the world.
This post card from Jordan would not be complete without mentioning the
fantastic feeling of being honoured with a visit to the recently discovered
baptism site, supposedly where John the Baptist himself had baptised Jesus
Christ. As I stood of the newly uncovered steps of a 2,000 year old ceramic
lined pool in the middle of the desert, I asked the professor in charge of
the excavations.
"Where might Jesus have been standing when he was baptised?"
Smiling, he replied, "Not might, but did, and exactly where you are now!"
"Here go I, walking in the footsteps of history and times gone by….."
